The Ferry service has finished for 2018 .  Please check back in the spring for timetable 2019

The ferry is licensed by Colchester Council and crewed by at least two trained volunteers. It is licensed for up to ten passengers. Weather permitting, the ferry runs at weekends when the tide is in from April to October. It usually runs from approximately two hours before the  tide to an hour and a half after. This year's timetable can be found on the next page .

Whilst some passengers simply enjoy an opportunity to view the communities from the river, the ferry provides a quick route to visit the opposite side of the river explore the communities there, visit frinds and family, enjoy walks, lunch or a drink. The ferry will take bicycles so passengers can enjoy an extended stay and cycle home.  The ferry service is entirely on a first come, first served basis.  A river crossing takes approximately ten minutes.

In Wivenhoe, you can catch the ferry from the pontoon by the shelter on the quay.  When the ferry is running the gate will be unlocked.
In Rowhedge, you can catch the ferry from the public pontoon.
The ferry can only land at Fingringhoe if the water is right.  Passengers wishing to travel to or from Fingringhoe must ask the ferry skipper to land.  This is entirely at the discretion of the skipper and usually only before high water.
